From doing it alone to equipping others: Dovecast’s vision of multiplication
Rev. James Leong
From individual production to equipping church teams, Dovecast sees media mission as a calling to multiply.
When Dovecast Media began in 2005, its first task was to record Christian life testimonies through film. The first testimony project arrived during the transition from VCD to DVD, and it showed the team how carefully made, truthful stories can cross distances that ordinary conversation cannot.
The next years of production also brought a candid lesson: moving subject matter does not automatically make a mature work. Story structure, camera, sound, pacing, and expression all require deliberate learning. In 2008, Rev. James Leong travelled to Hong Kong for media-mission and practical production training, then returned to Malaysia to put that learning into practice.
As projects accumulated and church partners began to notice a difference, the team saw something more important: a media ministry carried by one person can only go so far. A sustainable way forward is to help more believers discover, practise, and use their gifts in their own churches.
Dovecast’s focus therefore grew from doing it alone to equipping others. Training is not merely about editing, filming, or livestreaming; it also helps workers recognise stories, form a faithful media ethic, and serve with professionalism, integrity, and commitment to the Gospel.
Dovecast still produces work today while walking alongside churches that are building media teams. Our hope is that each equipped worker can become a faithful messenger in their own setting, so that this ministry is not confined to one team but continues to multiply.
