Responding in a pandemic: pre-recorded video and online pastoral care
Rev. James Leong
When in-person gatherings paused, how could churches continue care through pre-recorded media and online training?
During the pandemic, many churches suddenly faced the same reality: worship, small groups, Sunday school, prayer meetings, and care could no longer depend entirely on gathering in person. Video and online platforms became important channels for staying connected with congregations.
Yet many churches had no camera, editing, or production volunteers, and no established workflow. Recording a sermon, capturing usable audio, editing, adding subtitles, and publishing consistently with limited people and equipment became immediate practical needs.
During this period, Dovecast continued to offer training and share production experience with believers from different churches. The aim was not to make every church produce a glamorous programme, but to help them form durable basics: clear sound, stable images, appropriate content, and reliable teamwork.
Pre-recorded media also invited the team to reconsider the meaning of online pastoral care. Technology cannot replace community, visitation, or spiritual accompaniment. But when congregations cannot meet, a carefully prepared message or a participatory online gathering can still become a means of continued connection and care.
The pandemic has passed, but churches’ media needs have not. The question today is not merely whether a team can operate equipment, but how it can serve faithfully, respectfully, and sustainably in an environment of fast-moving information. Dovecast continues to walk with churches and turn lessons learned in crisis into foundations for the next generation of media teams.
